Ms. Hope Becker

Ms. Hope Becker was a long-time member of the Maritime College community. Ms. Becker died of liver cancer in October of 2002. Hope worked as a Counselor in SUNY Maritime College Student Support Services, and then as an Assistant Director of Admissions. Hope was active with Safe Rides in New Jersey as well as the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. She was awarded various certificates and rank in the Coast Guard. She was also long-time supporter of the SUNY Maritime Cultural Club Black History Month Dinner. 

 

Hope was an avid sailor from an early age. She owned an International One Design that she raced very successfully on the Sound. She participated in many women's championship races on the Sound. In addition, she sailed numerous types of vessels from small boats to large ocean racers all through her life. She was a banker, pilot, editor, librarian, school counselor, and a school admissions officer at the New York State Merchant Marine Academy, Fort Schuyler (SUNY Maritime College).

 

Her untimely death shook everyone who new and worked with her. Her friends and her students measure are a measure of Hope's many accomplishments.
