Howard graduated from SUNY Maritime College in 1979.

After graduation he worked as a 3rd Mate for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on self-propelled hopper dredges.

In 1980, he was the first African American to be accepted as an apprentice to the Pilot’s Association for the Bay and River Delaware. While serving as an apprentice pilot, Howard worked as a tugboat Captain.

In 1984, Captain Wyche became one of the first African American Marine Pilots in the US, in modern times, when he became a partner in the Pilot’s Association for the Bay and River Delaware.

“I enjoy working with the O.B.M.G. to keep its mission of helping the minority cadets at Maritime College pursue their dream of working in the maritime field. It is always a pleasure when I return to the College and see the young enthusiastic faces walking around campus.”
