Mr. Carl F. Burnett

In 1995, OBMG’s first scholarship honoree was Mr. Carl F. Burnett, Class of 1950. Mr. Burnett was the first African American Graduate of SUNY Maritime College. He graduated with a degree in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture.

After graduation, Mr. Burnett continued his studies at the City College of New York as well as Boston College doing graduate work in engineering and Business.

He went on the form Ashby International, Ltd., of which he became President. The company developed projects related to power generation, desalination, and industrial work worldwide.

Mr. Burnett was a passionate supporter and member of the OBMG.

Mr. Carl Burnett (1928-1998), was honored once again in 1999. So that we never forget Mr. Burnett and his dedication to SUNY Maritime College, the cadets, and students as well as his passionate support of the OBMG, we created our Academic Achievement Award in his honor.  The Carl F. Burnett Academic Achievement Award is granted annually to the qualifying cadet/student applicant with the highest GPA.
