Admiral Floyd Miller’53

In 1995, the OBMG honored former SUNY Maritime College President, Admiral Floyd Miller, USN (ret), (1931-2017) for his unyielding support for diversity and inclusion programs at the college such as The Cultural Club and the OBMG.

Admiral Floyd “Hoss” Miller graduated from the State University of New York Maritime College in 1953. He received his commission in the Navy that same year and through subsequent promotions attained the rank of Rear Admiral in 1977. His distinguished career included several at sea surface warfare ship commands, first commanding officer of the USS California (CGN36), commander of a Cruiser Destroyer Group, and commander of U.S. Navy Recruiting.

He retired from the Navy in 1982 to return to his alma mater and serve as President of the college until 1995. For a time, he also served as a Trustee of the Long Island Maritime Museum and as a Waterfront Chairman for the Centerport Yacht Club.
