General Information

Purpose To provide assistance and encouragement to Black and other minority undergraduates who are full time students and pursuing a career in the maritime profession. Eligibility Black or other minority students attending S.U.N.Y. Maritime College who show: 1. Financial need, based on the guidelines established by the New York State & federal regulations for special programs designed to assist economically and academically disadvantaged students. 2. A cadet who has demonstrated or whose conduct has been observed to indicate that the student has the potential to develop leadership abilities, based on professional competency and citizenship. 3. Carl F. Burnett Academic Achievement Award: Applicant should have a minimum of a 3.0 G.P.A. for the semester preceding the award. The 3.0 G.P.A. is based on a 4.0 scale. Recommendations will be considered from the college administration and faculty via the President's office and the Student Support Services Director. Financial data The amount awarded varies but will be at least $500. Awards of $1000.00 or more must be used toward the Summer Sea Term. Duration The stipend is awarded annually. Number of scholarships awarded Varies each year. The Organization of Black Maritime Graduates Board sets the amount and number of awards each year. Special features The award will be given in honor of an individual who has distinguished themselves in the support and encouragement of Black and minority involvement within the maritime & marine professions. Limitations Final selection of award recipient will be decided by the OBMG, Inc. Scholarship Committee after considering financial need, academic achievement and letters of recommendation. Deadline January 31st of each year. The award will be presented, at the Annual Cultural Club Black History Month Dinner.
