Captain Robert K. Cook, OBMG Founding Member & President

Captain Cook graduated from SUNY Maritime College in 1980 with Bachelor of Science degrees in Physical Oceanography and Meteorology. He also graduated with an Unlimited US Coast Guard 3rd Officer’s license. After graduation, Captain Cook worked with Military Sealift Command Atlantic for 10 years. He served on Underway Replenishment Ships, ultimately becoming the UnRep Department Head onboard. While in the service of MSC, Captain Cook also oversaw all aspects of dry-dock operations and ship repair work both in domestic and foreign shipyards. In addition, Captain Cook served on a MSC Hydrographic Surveillance ship and received the National Unit Citation Award for work done in the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea. In 1993, Captain Cook became one of the first African American Marine Pilots in the US, in modern times, when he became a partner in the Pilot’s Association for the Bay and River Delaware. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Maritime Academy Charter School, Grades 4-12, in Philadelphia. He and his family support numerous environmental and social economic causes from Ocean preservation to Fatherhood Initiatives. “I am most excited when I hear from the graduates and see them going forward with successful careers, becoming viable and productive members of society.”

Howard B. Wyche, OBMG Founding Member & Treasurer

Howard graduated from S.U.N.Y Maritime College in 1979. After graduation he worked as a 3rd Mate for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on self-propelled hopper dredges. In 1980, he was the first African American to be accepted as an apprentice to the Pilot’s Association for the Bay and River Delaware. While serving as an apprentice pilot, Howard worked as a tug boat Captain. In 1984, Captain Wyche became one of the first African American Marine Pilots in the US, in modern times, when he became a partner in the Pilot’s Association for the Bay and River Delaware. “I enjoy working with the O.B.M.G. to keep its mission of helping the minority cadets at Maritime College pursue their dream of working in the maritime field. It is always a pleasure when I return to the College and see the young enthusiastic faces walking around campus.”

Kevin L. Barrow, OBMG Board Member

Mr. Barrow was born in East Meadow, NY in 1972 and graduated from Amityville (Long Island) Memorial High School in 1990. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from S.U.N.Y. Maritime College in 1995. Kevin Barrow has been a partner in the Pilots’ Association for the Bay and River Delaware since 2001. Mr. Barrow has been married since 1998 and has three children. He currently lives in Wilmington, Delaware.

Edward A. Lenard, OBMG Board Member

Edward A. Lenard, OBMG Board Member

Edward A. Lenard currently works for Community Health Systems in Franklin, Tennessee as a Regional Engineer. He is responsible for over seeing the Environment of Care/Life Safety compliance for The Joint Commission as well as infrastructure projects Mechanical / Electrical / Plumbing / Roofing) at 36 healthcare facilites within his division. He also performs several environment of care/life safety mock surveys yearly in other divisions.

Edward previously worked as the Assistant Vice President of Operations and Maintenance at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City. Edward oversaw all aspects of the engineering, operations, maintenance (housekeeping) of the Intrepid Museum complex and Pier.

Edward also worked at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for approximately 10 years. He held various positions at MSKCC which included HVAC Controls Technician, Plant Operations Supervisor, Project Management Associate and Manager of Plant Operations.

He graduated from SUNY Maritime College in 1996 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Facilities Engineering and a Third Assistant Engineers, Unlimited Tonnage/Horsepower Coast Guard License.

Edward commissioned into the United States Navy Reserve upon graduation and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant in March 2007.

Edward currently resides in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Amie Carter, OBMG Board Member

Amie Carter, OBMG Board Member

Amie Carter is a graduate of SUNY Maritime College, class of 2000. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Facilities Engineering as well as her 3rd Assistant Engineer License.

After graduation, Amie was employed by Syska Hennessy Group as a Design Mechanical Engineer. She sailed with M.E.B.A. District -1 as a Third Assistant Engineer.

She is a member of the NAACP Huntington Chapter and the National Brotherhood of Skiers. She has served on the board of the SUNY Alumni Association and is a current board member of the Organization of Black Maritime Graduates Inc.

Sean Carswell, OBMG Board Member

Sean Carswell, OBMG Board Member

Mr. Carswell attended SUNY Maritime College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Facilities Engineering. Since his graduation, Sean’s career has taken him from Facilities and Energy Management to sailing on fiber optic repair vessels to his present position as a Reliability Centered Maintenance Engineer for The McHenry Management Group (TMMG). Mr. Carswell is strongly committed to public service. He is a very active member of the Board of Directors of the New York Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and manages the Chapters event space in Harlem. He also works with the New York Urban League Young Professionals on their membership and civic projects.

When Sean has free time he enjoys taking on a project with his company Upstart Media Group LLC. Some of his recent work includes marketing campaign for a new clothing line, event planning with New York City promoters and business managing for a production company.

Eric James, OBMG Board Member

Eric James, OBMG Board Member

Captain Eric James was born in Saint Thomas, United States Virgin Islands. Growing up in the islands is where Captain James’ interest in the maritime industry began.  He was fortunate to have an opportunity to attend high school in Massachusetts at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High and graduated there in 1989.  Mr. James continued his maritime interests and was admitted to Maine Maritime Academy.  Upon graduation in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nautical Science and a USCG license as a Deck Officer, he went to work with the Military Sealift Command working on an Oiler in the Caribbean. Captain Mr. James later got a position on the Great Lakes where he worked for Harrahs and obtained pilotage for Buffington Harbor and part of Lake Michigan. In 2000, he has taken as an Apprentice Pilot on the Delaware River. Since his completion of the apprenticeship in 2003, Mr. James has been a partner with the Pilots’ Association for the Bay and River Delaware guiding ships from sea to the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal and all ports along the river in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Captain James is proud to be a member of such a progressive organization and enjoys giving back by helping young professionals in the Maritime Industry.
 

Luis Burgos Ph.D., OBMG Board Member

Luis Burgos Ph.D., OBMG Board Member

Project Manager – Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC) NAVSEA – U.S. Navy

Mr. Burgos holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from S.U.N.Y. Maritime College, Class of ’77. He also received a Master’s of Science Degree – Engineering Management from Madison University in 2005, and a Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) – Engineering Management from Madison University in 2007. In addition, he is fluent in three languages.

He spent approximately 9-years in the marine industry private sector prior to joining the U.S. Government in 1986. He worked as a Ship Surveyor and Shipbuilding Specialist, serving multiple overseas tours supporting the troops. In 2004 he was promoted to the position of the Resource Manager, Waterfront Operations.

In 2006 Mr. Burgos was promoted to his present position, SERMC Project Manager. He presently leads Maintenance Team 12: USS John L. Hall (FFG-32), USS Doyle (FFG-39), Visit Ships, and Special Projects.

He has received numerous Commendations and Awards, including Meritorious Service Awards, Outstanding Performance Awards, and Exceptional Professionalism & Exemplary Performance Award.

Mr. Burgos is the Founder of OMEGA Marine Service providing marine surveying services, marine consulting services, and general marine services to boat owners, the yachting industry, marine underwriters and banking entities. OMEGA Marine is presently providing consulting and research services to Essential Energy Systems – a renewable green energy Corporation.

In addition to his efforts in supporting the OBMG, he volunteers at the Duval County Public Schools as well as mentors young people planning their college and professional careers.

He presently resides in Jacksonville, Florida with his wife, Nancy. They have two sons: Christopher and William.
